A week before and Gills had thumped Southend 8-1 with Gills Welsh International, Steve Lovell bagging four and in so doing became the first Gills player to score four goals in a League game for 29 years.

On the following Saturday the Gills did even better. They became the Talk of the Nation by thrashing Chesterfield 10-0 to register the highest score ever recorded in a Third Division game.
