THE BIG MATCH
DETAIL
It’s all down to this one … the final game away at relegated Wycombe, needing a point to ensure League One football next season. The simple facts are a win or a draw should keep us up … if we lose and Tranmere and Exeter win, we go down!
Skipper Barry Fuller (broken nose) misses the rest of the season after surgery. Fellow centre backs Garry Richards and Simon King (both ankle ligaments) are unavailable. On loan striker Rene Howe plays his last game, while fellow striker Chris Dickson has returned to Charlton after his loan spell expired.

Wycombe midfielder and longest serving player Matt Bloomfield believes boss Gary Waddock (pictured right) is the man to bring the club back up to League One at the first time of asking.
Bloomfield, 26, has played more than 200 times for Wanderers in a six-year spell and suffered a second relegation with the club last weekend at Leyton Orient. Out of contract in the summer, he has to wait and see if he remains in Waddock's plans for their League Two campaign next season.
But Bloomfield is desperate to stay and, if he does, he is confident the former QPR and Aldershot boss can mastermind an immediate return to League One.
Manager: Gary Waddock (Record to date: P35 W8 D13 L14)
Nickname: The Chairboys
Colours: Home – Navy & Light Blue. Away – All Black.
Ground: Adams Park
Capacity: 10,000
• Most capped player – Mark Rogers – 7 caps for Canada
• Best attendance: 9,002 v. West Ham 7/1/1995 – FA Cup R3
• Biggest league win: 5-0 v. Burnley – 1996/97 D2 (old)
• Most league appearances: Paul Hyde – 88 – 1993 to 1995
• Most goals in a season: Miguel de Souza - 18 – 1995/96 D3 (old)
• Biggest transfer fee received: £375,000 for Keith Scott from Swindon – Nov 1993
• Biggest transfer fee paid: £200,000 for Sean Devine to Barnet 1999 & Darren Currie also
to Barnet – 2001
There are no fresh injury concerns for Mark Stimson, so the Gills can field the same starting eleven as last weekend, but striker Chris Dickson’s loan spell has expired and Stimson won’t be looking to sign the forward during the summer.
Fellow loan frontman Rene Howe, who Stimson would like to sign, plays his last game for the club. A permanent deal looks unlikely as parent club Peterborough are asking a ‘high five-figure fee’ as well as Howe’s wages being on the high side.
Defensive trio Barry Fuller (broken nose), Simon King and Garry Richards (both ankle) are ruled out.
Talk about making it hard for us … Mr Paul Taylor from Hertfordshire is our referee this weekend for the final game of the season.
This will be his third time with the Gills this season. He was in charge for our home draw against Norwich City and he took charge of our draw against Charlton at the Valley.
He joined the list of Football League Linesmen in 1986, and is regarded as the Football League’s most senior match official, and has been a National List referee since 1990. He started his refereeing career in 1977 and operated initially on the Hertfordshire County and Isthmian Leagues.
Gills eleven from (4-4-2): Alan Julian (GK), Simon Royce (GK), John Nutter, Josh Gowling, Kevin Maher, Curtis Weston (pictured above), Stuart Lewis, Chris Palmer, Danny Jackman, Mark Bentley, Dennis Oli, Simeon Jackson, James Walker, Andy Barcham, Jack Payne, Tom Wynter, Rashid Yussuff, Rene Howe, Adam Miller, Connor Essam.
Striker Alex Revell is unavailable after completing his emergency loan spell from Southend, while fellow forward Stuart Beavon broke his leg earlier this week during a local cup competition match.
Captain Adam Hinshelwood has a knee injury as has former Gills defender Leon Johnson, while Ian Westlake misses the game due to an ankle injury.
On loan defenders Alan Bennett and Julian Kelly, who has recovered from a hamstring strain, could both return.
Gills boss Mark Stimson (right) reckons Wycombe’s relegation last weekend makes his side’s task a little more straightforward, although he has to still be wary of the threat they pose wanting to leave League One ‘with a bang’.
A point will guarantee our status, although even defeat may not relegate us if Tranmere and Exeter both fail to win.
He said: “I think if Wycombe needed to win to stay up it might have been a bit more intense, but they will be hurting and the last home game of the season you don’t want to lose that in front of your own supporters.
I’m sure if they could pick a team to go down with them it would be Gillingham because of the location and the fantastic following that we will take.”
The away following will number 2,300 at Adams Park – a complete sell out, so don’t think of travelling if you haven’t got a ticket. Stimson added: “I think there will be about 2,000 there, that just shows what a fantastic following we’ve got and we hope we can take those people back to Gillingham happy and proud of their team.”
“We would’ve loved to be safe with a few games to go, but we’re not. We know what’s needed, we’ve got to go and get it now. Fingers crossed when that final whistle goes we can know the job is done.”
Our survival odds improved still further today (Thursday) when the Football Association held a disciplinary hearing into charges of the club fielding an ineligible player in their victory at Brighton last month and were docked three points, which sees them drop below the Gills in the table.
On the player front, there will be a number of difficult decisions made after the weekend when Stimson decides who he wants to keep and who is to be released in preparation for next seasons campaign.
Part of that decision will be dictated by the finances … there clearly won’t be a great deal of money to spend to strengthen so any signings involving a fee may well be a no-go.
That probably rules out any chance of on loan striker Rene Howe (left) joining permanently from Peterborough.

He said: “Since he has come in the training has been fantastic and the team spirit has been building and building and in the last six weeks you have seen the type of team he wants and the type of football he wants played. I can only see that improve next season.”
Bloomfield will hope the final game of the season with Gillingham is not his last at Adams Park in a Wycombe shirt and is solely focused on making sure they give their fans something to shout about.
He said: “The fans have been brilliant all season and we can't thank them enough. We want to give them something to cheer about. Hopefully I will be a part of that.
“It is important that we didn't go down with a whimper and can have a bit of momentum going into next season with a win over Gillingham.”
