Oldham Athletic 1 v Gills 0
Gills dreadful away record this season and indeed their entire League One history of not achieving three points on their travels, continued with yet another defeat, this time at fellow strugglers Oldham Athletic.
This was Gills 20th attempt at winning an away game this campaign. A game that was a definite six-pointer given the close proximity of both clubs to the bottom four.
Gills are a sad outfit on the road and this game showed all their faults in a lack of punch in attack, lapses of concentration and a real lack of resolve to solve their lack of success away from Priestfield.
As a League One manager Mark Stimson (left) appears not to be able to put out and motivate a winning away team having only won twice in all of Gills League One games that he has been in charge of over two seasons.
Saturday 3 April - League Division One - Report by GillsConnect Man on the Terrace
This latest defeat coupled with other lower team results on Friday and Saturday dropped Gills below the relegation line into the bottom four. On this form and with some hard matches to come it looks like Gills face an enormous task to pull clear.
As to the match itself, Oldham’s on-loan Lewis Guy scored the single goal match winner as he ran onto a diagonal pass from Stephens and ghosted in between static Gills defence. Lewis then managed to hit a low shot without much pace that cruised into the net past a stranded Alan Julian.
Mark Stimson recalled Chris Dickson (left) to the starting line-up for the suspended Dennis Oli in the only change from the 2-2 draw against MK Dons the previous Saturday. There was also a welcomed return for captain Barry Fuller who was included among the substitutes.
Gills started brightly enough but this early promise was flattering to deceive and the match was low on quality throughout from both sides. That is apart from Latics skipper and old Gills adversary, Sean Gregan who repeatedly broke up Gills attacking options with some clever positioning and defence organisation.
Adam Miller did create an early opportunity when he put Andy Barcham through on goal but the in-form Gills winger saw his curling shot from just inside the area saved by Oldham goalkeeper Dean Brill. Oldham were spasmodic in attack although eventual match winner Lewis Guy did have one first half effort blocked by Alan Julian with his feet and a Stevens shot was also saved by the Gills keeper.
The rest of the first half saw nervous play from both sides who knew that one mistake could be fatal for their chances of staying up this season.
The fifty-minute mark saw the Gills best effort when Sean Gregan did make an error missing a Curtis Weston long ball. Chris Dickson raced away with ball and then inexplicably tried a thirty-yard shot for glory. With his known pace Chris would have been well advised to run down the goalkeeper before trying a goal bound shot. This was a good chance clearly wasted by the recalled striker.
Mark Stimson appeared to be livid on the touchline and he substituted the wasteful striker with James Walker.
Oldham were beginning to show signs of belief and were looking more aggressive in trying for the winner. Gills were wilting under the pressure and on 58 minutes, disaster for the Gills, as Lewis Guy (right) scored the winner.
Gills were galvanized into urgent action and at last showed signs of wanting to win the game for the last fifteen minutes of this match but it was to no avail and it was a sorry looking Gills who trouped off at the final whistle.
An even sorrier bunch in the dressing room when they learnt of their bottom four fate arising from other League One results.
