Danny Spiller gave Gills the lead with only three minutes on the clock when he scrambled the ball home (pictured top right scoring and below right turning) after his original header from a Curtis Weston cross was parried by the keeper.

The visitors had chances to increase their lead during the first half but were finding difficulty in hitting the target on a few occasions.

Darts though kept plugging away and almost bagged an equaliser after 36 minutes when Danny Harris had his shot cleared off the line by Tony Sinclair.

Both sides made changes during the interval with Gills bringing on Jack Payne for Barry Fuller, Chris Palmer for John Nutter, Kevin Maher for Mark Bentley, Luke Rooney for Danny Spiller. Sergio Makofo for Andy Barcham,  and Fola Onibuje replacing Stefan Payne.

The Darts were again unfortunate when denied by a goal line clearance after Jack Pack made an instinctive block from a right wing cross on 53 minutes. Within a minute Gills doubled their lead when Chris Palmer floated in a cross from the left wing that sailed over the keepers head and into a empty net.

Darts had another good chance to reduce the deficit when a deep cross from the right by Ryan Hayes after 64 minutes was narrowly missed by Adam Burchell at the far post.

Tempers became a bit frayed a few minutes later when Ellot Bradbrook and Curtis Weston squared up to one another infront of the dugouts, before Gills boss Andy Hessenthaler stepped onto the pitch to calm things down.

With around 4 minutes remaining the Darts pulled a goal back when a Hayes free-kick went through the Gills wall 20 yards out before being toe-pocked home by Tom Bonner. With just a minute of normal time remaining,

Gills assistant manager Ian Hendon (right) who had been incensed by an earlier tackle from Ryan Hayes on Jack Payne, kicked the ball straight at the Darts player after it had gone out for a throw in.

It then all kicked off in front of the dugouts before referee Steve Bennett banished Hendon to the stands.
