“I said to the boys go out second-half as they’ve come off to a big boo at half-time because I thought we were in control of it.

I said they’ll probably have a little spell where they’ll get back into it, but just try and keep doing the things we done in the first-half.

Unfortunately we didn’t do that as well and they nicked a goal, so to come away 1-0 is disappointing.”

When Stimson was asked if he thought one goal would win it he replied. “I think both teams haven’t scored a lot of goals this year so you always knew there weren’t going to be many. First-half we did have a couple of opportunities to get the goal.

We didn’t and late on I think Barcham just got behind them, but the boy Gregan at the back read the situation with all his experience and cleared the danger,”

Meanwhile the Gills boss berated striker Chris Dickson (right) for his wayward goal attempt from all of 35 yards when saying, “Chris has got space.

He is running into space so why shoot from there, Amazing decision, and you can see where the ball ended up.”

He continued, “It wasn’t so much about that it was his reaction for the next two minutes he was worried about the shot that went over.

Their centre-half stepped in at least two or three times and cleared balls so it was disappointing.”

Stimson went on, “Dickson has got ability but sometimes it’s not all about ability, it’s about desire and knowing the game and at the moment he is falling short in that area.”

The manager admitted the Gills had missed the services of leading scorer Simeon Jackson but also acknowledged they’d banged in two goals in each of the last two matches without him. He is hoping though to have his prodigal son available to face Southend on Easter Monday.

Stimson refuted claims that the referee didn’t punish some of the Latics robust challenges on his players by retorting with, “If anything there wasn’t enough tackles from our side. I thought there were certain players today who didn’t put their foot in when you had to. We played Oldham earlier in the season and they put their foot in but they compete in the right way.”

He added, “The boy Gregan (right) has been about and wants to win the ball but unfortunately if you’re in the way sometimes he misses the ball and gets you instead but that’s part and parcel of the game.

I think Gregan just bullied our boys today and was way, way above our centre-forwards whoever we put up there. It was disappointing especially as we got him a yellow card early on in the game.”

Stimson concluded with, “For their goal I think Danny Jackman should have played the ball over the top, but tried to be too clever in the middle of midfield, we lost the ball and they had a breakaway and scored.

You ask these players to do certain things but sometimes they don’t do it and that’s what becomes really frustrating.”
