He continued, “We could see they played with no fear and I’m sure if they play like that they’ll win the League by Christmas next year with the football they tried to play but we didn’t get anywhere near them, We didn’t match them in any department and saying that we probably had the best chance of the game to go 1-1.”

Questioned about yet another under-par showing from his team on their travels, Stimson retorted, “I expected a lot more. Away from home we’ve had some poor performances.

I’d say we’d had a couple of games away from home, Southampton, Leeds and Millwall where we’ve played strong sides.

With a squad we’ve got and the limitations with the budget maybe they were half expected but places like this and Brentford is no way near acceptable.”

Stimson added, “We’ll all have to look at ourselves, me as the manager and the players as players and say did you do enough. Can’t thank the chairman enough, he backed us by putting us up in a hotel last night. We came down early and that was my decision and he backed that and paid the money out and tried to give the players their best chance but a few today didn’t perform.”

Asked whether he thought he’d still be the Gills manager next season, Stimson replied, “I don’t know, I’m contracted but that will be up to the chairman. He will make that decision and I’m sure he’ll be honest with me.

You could see the supporters at the end weren’t too happy and there were shouts of my name out. We’ve been through that again, but that’s a discussion me and the chairman will have and I’m sure he’ll make the right decision what he thinks to take the club forward.”

He continued, “To get the promotion last year and be on such a high and to come straight back down is a massive body blow and something we wasn’t expecting and obviously we didn’t want.”

Asked when he was hoping to see chairman Paul Scally, he replied, “I would expect as soon as possible because he’s over from Dubai for a couple of days so I expect to talk to him as soon as possible.

We were going to speak anyway, obviously regarding next year but obviously now the conversation might be a bit different but again like I say an honest person he’s an honest man as well.

We’ve been honest since day I’ve been here. It’s been a privilege and I’m sure we’ll have an honest chat.”
