HESS: “WE COULD HAVE WON FOUR OR FIVE ONE”
Sunday 29 August 2010
Gills manager Andy Hessenthaler spoke to BBC Radio following the match, “We just got to keep plugging away, we’ve lost one and unfortunately we’ve had three draws but all of a sudden it could turn around and we could have three wins”.
“There’s still a long way to go and I couldn’t fault the boys performance today.”
Andy said, “Such a frustrating game football, as we should have won the game. Lance’s kit is not even dirty and he’s not had a shot to save”.
“He’s had to pick the ball out of the net from one header and one header went over the bar. At the end of the match you hear their tannoy system saying the Man of the Match was their goal keeper!” (Barry Roche).
Hess continued, “Criticism of us you know, we’ve got to take our chances as we had some fantastic opportunities with quite a few in the first half. They couldn’t handle Andy Barcham and their keeper made a fantastic save when he cut inside as he was terrorizing their right back”.
“We started very sloppy second half and, because of the wind, we fell into the trap of going long sometimes and then one cross and they score as we switched off. Then we got our just rewards really we deserved to win the game. It will be interesting to see how many shots we had at the goal and the opportunities we had on another given day we could have won four or five one”.
Hess talking about the Gills goal said, “Fantastic goal from Danny Spiller and a great ball in from Chris Palmer. We deserved to get something and on another day we could have won this by a mile”.
“We have got to start taking our chances in games, especially on our travels, this is not an easy place to come Morecambe you know as they are going to make it tough for us but I can’t fault the performance today as I thought we were outstanding”.
“In the dressing room we crititise each other for giving the goal away, for as much as the possession we’ve had, and the chances we had, we still have to stay solid at the back”.
Then in constructive mood Hess commented, “We have got to take some positives out it and we are the draw specialists at the moment but we are unbeaten away from home and it will come. We just got to keep believing it will come. I would be a worried man if we were not creating chances”.
Talking about the two players who were making their debuts Andy said, “Lance did great, for what he had to do, he looked assured and his kicking was great against a tough wind and he did really well for his first start”.
“Cody (right) was rusty but you could see, especially in the first half he was bright and give him a couple more games, his fitness will come and he will cause problems for defences. Another positive is that Barry Fuller is fitter now then he has ever been which is good news for us.
Commenting on the game at Southend next Tuesday Hess continued, “We may give the big man (Bayo) a rest because he’s picked up a couple of knocks and has had an injection for today’s game in his shoulder”.
“Mark McCammon might get a start along with Stefan Payne so we will use it as a chance to change things around and get other players some minutes on the pitch”.
