GILLS HOME ADVANTAGE IN THE PROMOTION BANK
SATURDAY 4 February 2012
Gills manager Andy Hessenthaler has asked for all fans to get behind his team as they aim for a League Two Play-off position. Hess told the official site, "When you're not winning games and things aren't great then obviously people will get frustrated.”
“It doesn't help anybody when fans get disgruntled, that doesn't help the team but nine times out of 10 the majority of the fans are with us, they'll stay with us and I can't fault them.”
Hess continued, "Fans want to win football matches like the players do and I do. When that doesn't happen an element of frustration will creep in, we just need to make sure we start the game right for them and show we're up for it ourselves."
With today’s postponed home game with Hereford United to be rescheduled, the Gills will have a surplus of home games to call upon in their run in for promotion places. Currently Gills have played three more away games then at Priestfield and following their next fixture at Burton Albion they would have played four more games away, than at their home base.
This anomaly has had some impact on the Gills who were sitting in the Play-off positions one month ago and just nine points away from the leaders but now their points total has remained static on 41 and Gills have dropped down the table to 10th.
The Gills boss is still confident and said, "You have to get on and keep working hard. We have 19 games to go, we still have everything to play for and we want to turn it around. I have every confidence in the players, I've been disappointed the last few weeks but they will be in themselves too.”
The Priestfield Hereford game was to be the start of a winning run for Andy Hess and the Gills squad but their chance to turn around their losing streak will now rest in another away game at promotion rivals Burton Albion.
Paul Peschisolido’s team were beaten at Priestfield last September by 3-1 with two goals from Danny Kedwell and one from Frank Nouble. (Click for Big Match Report of Gills v Burton)
